Chapter Three

They spoke well into the night, and the preparations for their plan to breach the Champion outpost started the next day. With the scheduled time of Mackintosh’s check-in coming soon, they had no time to lose.

Cláudia was the one who’d led Win and most of his crew around yesterday to the cots and sleeping bags assigned to them, then in the morning to get food, and now she was leading them to a non-descript room in the corridors of the base.

Hidden under the earth, even deeper than the central point, the room was dark and smelled damp. It was an armory.

Cláudia pulled them into a corner, and Win gazed around as they went. Weapons hung on the walls, from small laser guns to phasers and blasters—even what looked to Win like a small version of the Spiders’ plasma cannon. Suits and other pieces of armor were kept in another corner, and by the door useful pieces of tech sat with no organizing principle that Win could find. There were pads and other types of screens, multipurpose tools and toolkits, different types of goggles…

Win already knew the Resistance was well-supplied—with how many hoverbikes they managed to steal and keep, he shouldn’t be surprised by this armory. But it was still something to walk into a room like this.

Around him, people were already strapping on their mish-mash of protective vests, suits, boots, holsters… Win stood beside Aya. The two of them had their new Battle Suits.

Aya scowled at the burnt hole on the back of his chest piece.

“Dr. Nery took a look at me last night,” Win told her. “I’m alright. My back hurts a bit, but it looks worse than it is. The suit really protected me.”

“You got lucky,” Aya snapped back. “Plasma could punch a hole through you.”

“But it didn’t,” Win said, making his voice cheerful. “Now help me strap things on! Between the leg and the weak arm and now my back it’s kind of hard to do alone.”

Aya pinched the bridge of her nose. “I really don’t know why you can’t just sit tight and let someone else go.”

“You’re the Captain, after all,” Cláudia agreed. “And now you’re one of our leaders as well! But I’ll admit that with the Champions in the retrieval team, we don’t have a lot of people who can work with that shuttle. It’s different than a hoverbike!”

“You’ll pick things up fast,” Win reassured.

“Lots of people from our crew have experience with Spider shuttles,” Aya said.

“No one who’s here,” Win argued. “Who would take my place, Andrade? Dr. Nery?”

Aya sighed. “Shut up. Let me help you put this on.”

“I’ve been wondering how many of you are there,” Cláudia commented as she got ready herself. “That Chadwick of yours got in contact with us about sending more of your crew out here, and people are already arriving!”

“There are a lot of us, considering everything,” Win admitted. “The Cartographer wasn’t made for a big crew, but the Patroclus station was, and though a lot of people died when it was hit, we rescued everyone we could.
